The forward deployed engineer title is now being recruited for by name at OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, alongside the enterprises buying from them. Descriptions of the role are consistent across sources: engineers embedded in a customer's technical environment, writing code that runs in the customer's production systems, owning delivery through to production rather than handing over recommendations.
