What we collect, and what we do not

The short version: we ask for one email address. Everything else is a choice you make on the site, and you can change or delete all of it.

What we collect

Your email address. You give it to us when you join. It is how we sign you in and how the Sunday lesson reaches you. It is the only thing we ask for.

Where we think you are. We guess your country from your connection so we can show the right career paths and the right currency. It is a guess, it is stored as a country code and nothing finer, and you can override it in Settings at any time.

The path you pick. If you choose a career destination, we store that choice so the site can show you what is relevant to it.

What you do here. We keep a record of actions on your account: signing in, opening a piece, and anything that costs Chalk. We use it to understand what the site costs us to run and to show you your own balance. It is not sold, shared, or used to build a profile of you elsewhere.

What we do not collect

No password. We do not have one, so we cannot lose one. Signing in works by a one-time link sent to your email.

No phone number. We do not ask for one and there is nowhere to enter one.

No payment details. The site is free. There is no checkout, no card form, and no billing system.

No tracking pixels, and no advertising. We do not run trackers that follow you to other sites, and we do not sell or share what we hold.

Analytics

At the time of writing we run no analytics at all. No Google Analytics, no product analytics, no tag manager. If that changes, this page changes with it, and we will say plainly what is running and what it sees.

Cookies

Three, all set by us, none used for advertising:

  • aic_session keeps you signed in. It is signed, readable only by the server, and expires after 30 days.
  • aic_geo remembers the country you chose, so we stop guessing.
  • aic_role remembers the path you picked.

Clearing your cookies signs you out and forgets those preferences. It does not delete your account.

Who else sees anything

Google Fonts. The typefaces on this site load from Google's servers, which means Google receives your IP address and browser details when a page loads. That is the only third party involved in serving this site, and we are looking at self-hosting the fonts to remove it.

Email delivery requires a provider to send the message to your inbox. Beyond that, nobody else receives your data. We do not use processors for advertising, profiling, or resale, because we do none of those things.

How long we keep it

Your account and its data stay until you ask us to delete them. Sign-in links expire after 15 minutes and work exactly once.

What you can do

See it, change it, or delete it. Your email, country and path are all in Settings. To delete your account and everything attached to it, email us and we will do it, and confirm when it is done. You do not need to give a reason.

Unsubscribing from the newsletter does not delete your account, and deleting your account removes you from the newsletter. They are separate on purpose.

Depending on where you live you may have specific rights over your data, including access, correction, deletion and portability. Ask, and we will honour them.

Children

This site is written for working professionals. It is not aimed at children and we do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 16.

Changes

If we change what we collect, we change this page in the same release, and the date at the top moves. We will not quietly widen it.

Contact

Questions, corrections, or a deletion request: write to us and a person will answer.
